Earl while always having had an independent nature was also quite easy to communicate with. The most important "command" that any dog, be it a pet or working animal, should know and be expected to heed is the cue to give you their immediate attention when asked to do so. I was quite pleased to discover that while he may be quite independent, Earl would readily give me his undivided attention. He is expected to focus on me. Once I have his regard it is a small thing for me to ask and receive more from him.
